Today a session of the Advisory Board on Military Personnel Rights Issues adjunct to the Defender took place. Representatives of NGOs also attended the session.
The Human Rights Defender made an opening remarks emphasizing that the civil oversight is an important guarantee for the protection of soldiers rights. He raised a number of issues related to the strengthening of discipline in the army and improvement of appeal mechanisms, as well as the practice of medical examination of conscripts and servicemen.
"When enrolling to the military service, citizens should be confident that their health problems have been properly examined and, if necessary, all the appeal mechanisms are available. On the other hand, military discipline is an important guarantee of the rule of law in the army.", said Arman Tatoyan.
During the session, the realization of the right to adequate housing for servicemen and members of their families was also highlighted, which, along with the above mentioned issues, are presented in the Defender's 2018 Annual Report.
The Human Rights Defender stresses the importance of the civil oversight in the armed forces, as well as effective cooperation with NGOs and the Ministry of Defense with an aim of solving issues in the field.
An agreement was reached to summarize and submit the issues raised during the session to the Ministry of Defense.
