From the first day of Garegin Chugaszyan’s deprivation of liberty, regular visits are conducted to Nubarashed penitentiary institution by the order of the Human Rights Defender. During every visit, private conversations are held with Garegin Chubaryan and his detention conditions, the state of his health, as well as respective documents are examined considering the fact that he is on hunger strike.
During the last visit on May 10, Garegin Chugaszyan had clear consciousness, but was feeling weak. Due to hunger strike, the state of his health requires intensive medical supervision. Besides, taking into consideration that the conditions of Garegin Chubaszyan’s cell are unacceptable, there have been both oral and written statements raising the question of his transfer to another cell.
The Defender’s representatives are also in constant contact with Garegin Chubaszyan’s lawyer.
During the visit to the penitentiary institution, there have also been private conversations with Arayik Khandoyan and Ashot Petrosyan, who are on hunger strike. A number of questions raised by them were immediately resolved with the assistance of the Defender’s representatives, including a transfer of a crutch to Ashot Petrosyan.
Treatment towards a person on hunger strike requires exclusively medical approach, with special principles. From this perspective, it is important to keep the person on hunger strike under constant medical supervision. Taking into consideration that there was no proper medical supervision of the persons on hunger strike, a question was raised in relation to taking immediate steps in that regard.
