As a result of stereotypes present among the public, shortcomings of legislative regulations, and environmental inconveniences, persons with disabilities repeatedly encounter barriers to realization of their rights, social inclusion, and independence in their everyday lives. This was noted by the Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan during a meeting organized with the NGOs aware about the issues of the field. “We are not correctly addressing the problems of persons with disabilities. For example, we keep children with disabilities isolated, and later are trying to integrate socially alienated individuals into society”, said the Defender.
On July 22, during the meeting organized between the Human Rights Defender’s Office and NGOs within the framework of the project “Promoting Human Rights Protection in Armenia for All”, issues with regard to the protection of rights of people with disabilities recorded in the Defender’s 2017 annual report were presented.
The NGO representatives raised their concerns, and an agreement was made to work jointly toward resolution of problems in this field.
As a reminder, by the adoption of the RA law “On the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and their Social Inclusion,” the Defender will be authorized to carry out monitoring on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and the state of protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
