Regular Session of the Expert Council on Prevention of Torture adjunct to the Defender has been Conducted

On October 24 2016 the regular session of the Expert Council on Prevention of Torture adjunct to the Defender has been conducted. Within the session the schedule and the list of the places of deprivation of liberty, where the Council conducts periodic visits, has been discussed.

 

The involvement of the Council’s members during the visits of the Human Rights Defender’s Office in the places of deprivation of liberty has been confirmed as well. The participants of the session have discussed in details the unannounced visit to “Abovyan” Penitentiary Institution conducted by the Human Rights Defender’s and the civil society representatives several days ago.

 

During the meeting the systematic mechanisms of the prevention of death, particularly the suicide cases have been the subject of discussion. The participants also determine the measures that will comprehensively prevent the suicide and self-injury cases in the places of deprivation of liberty with the cooperation of relevant state authorities.

 

Within the meeting the Defender highlighted the importance of the participation of members of the Council in the events organized by the Human Rights Defender’s Office that has educative or other purpose. The involvement of the penitentiary officers in the educative projects has been particularly highlighted.
