During the working visit to Strasburg Arman Tatoyan, the RA Human Rights Defender met Thorbjørn Jagland, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
During the meeting the activities of the Human Rights Defender's Office during the pre-election and election period of the RA National Assembly were presented and discussed. Particularly, the working principles and priorities the working created for that specific purpose were presented. The recorded complaints, examined publications and the measures undertaken to solve the raised issues were discussed as well.
The new regulations of the RA Constitutional Law on Human Rights Defender concerning the work with civil society and state bodies were presented to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The cooperation in the field of prevention of torture and ill-treatment, protection of economic rights, rights of military personnel, children’s rights, and in a number of other fields were also discussed
The results of the fact-finding mission proving the shootings at Chinari village of Tavush region by the Azerbaijani military forces were presented as well.
In the course of the meeting Arman Tatoyan raised the question of the anti-Armenian hatred policy of Azerbaijan and its dangerous manifestation for the European bodies and primarily for the Council of Europe. No results can be achieved by Azerbaijan through prosecuting t international experts, including members of the European Parliament and international organizations should be actively involved in Artsakh.
Arman Tatoyan presented to the Council of Europe Secretary General the work carried out by the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh, including his published reports. Ruben Melikyan's fact-finding activities based on internationally defined principles were also presented, highlighting the importance of his participation in international programs and meetings.
Thorbjørn Jagland emphasized the importance of the Human Rights Defender’s standpoint and work towards the implementation of the European standards in Armenia in the mentioned field.
The parties agreed to continue the cooperation and take measures to implement the agreements reached during the meeting.
