Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan by a special invitation of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture participated in the Geneva in the high-level conference dedicated to the Optional Protocol to the “Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment”.
Within the framework of the conference, Arman Tatoyan had a meeting with the Chair of the UN Subcommittee for Prevention of Torture Mr. Malcolm Evans. A. Tatoyan acquainted him with provisions of the Draft Law of RA “On the Human Rights Defender”. In the their discussion, interlocutors paid a special attention to the issues related to the activity of the Ombudsman as a national preventive mechanism, ensuring the independence of this institute, implementation of the principles of communication with the civil society, were especially stressed. M. Evans stressed the importance of the mechanism of working with the civil society, which was introduced in the draft law.
In the process of event the role of Ombudsmen as national preventive mechanisms, specifics of their relations with the civil society and the state. Participants emphasized the strengthening of guarantees to be provided by the state to the activities of national preventive mechanisms.
Organizers of the event invited high-level representatives of UN member states, international experts, as well as representatives of international organizations.
