Council of Europe’s Director General of the Human Rights and Rule of Law considered effective the Defender’s work

On May 28, the Human Rights Defender of Armenia Arman Tatoyan had a working meeting with the Council of Europe Director General of the Human Rights and Rule of Law Christos Giakoumopoulos.

 

During the meeting, the parties discussed joint projects implemented by the Directorate General of the Human Rights and Rule of Law and Human Rights Defender’s Office with regard to torture and ill-treatment, protection of right of persons deprived of liberty, improvement of detention practice, etc. 

 

Concerning the events that occurred in Armenia during April and May, Christos Giakoumopoulos underlined the important role of the Human Rights Defender in guaranteeing the rights of protesters and in insuring tolerant atmosphere. The Defender’s impartial approach and effective work, as well as rapid response to problems were also highlighted.

 

Arman Tatoyan expressed his thankfulness to the Director General for the support and following the activities of the Defender, as well as for appreciating them.

 

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to strengthen the cooperation and intensify the joint work.
