From February 4 to 5, the representatives of the Human Rights Defender held consultations in Strasbourg with senior officials of the Council of Europe and ECHR, as well as with a judge of the European Court of Human Rights Armen Harutyunyan.
The experience of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia as a third party in Hakobyan v Armenia case, as well as in providing special positions to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe was discussed. During the consultations, attention was paid to the judgments of the European Court related to the protection of human rights in the armed forces.
The CoE senior officials emphasized that the work of the Armenian Ombudsman is an example of international best practices.
During the visit, the CoE activities in the field of anti-discrimination, implemented projects, as well as issues with regard to the role of ombudsman were discussed in the framework of the human rights protection system in the armed forces.
The visit was organized with the support of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan within the framework of “Strengthening the Application of European Human Rights Standards in the Armed Forces" project.
