The rights should be protected regardless the political status of the territory: The Human Rights Defender paid a visit to Artsakh

From 11 to 12 October, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Arman Tatoyan paid a visit to Artsakh. During the visit, meetings took place with the President of Artsakh Mr. Bako Sahakyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Masis Mayilyan, Primate of the Diocese of Artsakh Archbishop Pargev and the representatives of the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh.

During the meetings, the protection of rights of our compatriots from Artsakh and issues with regard to cooperation in this field were discussed.

The principle is clear: political status of the territory should not affect the protection of human rights therein. The international human rights organizations should accept this well-known principle, which lies at the foundation of this structures. There are people, namely women, children, persons with disabilities living in Artsakh, who should be protected and whose rights should be guaranteed regardless the status of the territory.

The civil society and the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh should be involved in international processes with regard to human rights. The visits of international human rights organizations to Artsakh should be active as well. These issues require our joint and constant efforts. The ongoing activities should be apolitical and highly professional through flexible relations with our compatriots from Diaspora and international structures.

In all of these issues, the role of the Human Rights Defender of Artsakh is crucial. We are confident that the activities of this institution will continue to be effective. The Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia will make all efforts to develop already established close cooperation.
