Any act of violence and statements insulting dignity are impermissible: the incident that took place in 18 Amiryan street should be properly investigated

The Human Rights Defender sent an official letter to the RA Police on the steps undertaken with regard to the incident. Taking into account that a criminal case has already been initiated, it is necessary to properly investigate all the circumstances of the case. Considering the incident, as well as the preceding and following developments that are concerning from the human rights perspective, the Human Rights Defender records the following:

  • The Human Rights Defender considers any act of violence, as well as any public statement that insults a person’s dignity impermissible. The rights and freedoms of others must be respected.
  • The physical integrity of a person should be absolutely protected within the state. This is guaranteed by the RA Constitution and international commitments. The right to physical integrity may be restricted exclusively by the law and for the purposes prescribed in the Constitution.
  • Everyone’s dignity must be respected, it is inviolable and is an indispensable basis for the rights and freedoms of each citizen. This is how the solidarity is shaped in the society and an atmosphere of mutual respect is maintained.
  • Such incidents should be followed by a rapid response from the competent authorities, guaranteeing the rule of law.

The Human Rights Defender will be consistent with regard to the full, objective and comprehensive investigation of the case.
