Armenia examines the European experience on human rights protection

With the assistance of the Council of Europe the representatives of the RA Human Rights Defender’s Office visited to Austria and France from 12 -15 June. The delegation included V. Rshtuni, Chairman of the RA Court of Appeal,  G. Narinyan, judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Aragatsotn region and A. Arakelyan, Rector of Academy of Justice of Armenia,  as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations.

 

During the visit, the delegation met the Human Rights Defender of Austria Ms. Gertrude Brinek, and the Chief of Cabinet of Ms. Gertrude Brinek, Michael Mauerer. The main activities and issues of two ombudsman institutions and experiences of overcoming those issues have been discussed.

 

Special attention was paid to the activities of National Preventive Mechanism Commissions of Austria. An agreement concerning the future cooperation and organisation of joint trainings has been reached.

 

In Strasburg, the delegation took part in Grand Chamber hearing of case Nait-Liman v. Switzerland at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

 

The delegation met A. Harutyunyan, judge of the European Court of Human Rights who presented the latest developments in ECHR case law.

 

Discussions are envisaged with Mr. Hovhannisyan, Permanent RepresentativeAmbassador of Armenia to the Council of Europe, representatives of a number of human rights divisions of the Council of Europe and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.
