Seminar on Prevention of Suicide and Self-Injury in Penitentiary Institutions

On February 25 and 26, within the scope of cooperation between the Human Rights Defender’s Office and Penal Reform International, a joint seminar was held in Aghveran on the Prevention of Suicide and Self-Injury in Penitentiary Institutions with the participation of an international expert.

 

The representatives of the Defender’s staff, representatives of NGO’s that form the Expert Council on Prevention of Torture adjunct to the Defender, independent experts, as well as representatives from social and psychological sphere of the penitentiary system of the Ministry of Justice.

 

Reasons for suicides and self-injuries, motives of persons deprived of liberty to commit such acts, prevention methods, development of a prevention plan and the international experience of preventing the suicides and self-injures were discussed.

 

A special attention was paid on revealing the vulnerable groups, ongoing activities with those groups, enhancing the educational and qualitative skills of persons working in penitentiary institutions, as well as those responsible for the coverage of suicide cases.
