The Secretary General of the Council of Europe highly valued the activities of the Human Rights Defender during demonstrations

On May 28, the Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan had a working meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland in Strasbourg.

 

During the meeting, first and foremost the activities and assessments of the Defender with regard to the events occurred in Armenia during April and May were discussed. In particular, a reference was made to the Defender’s activities with regard to rights protection of the participants of peaceful demonstrations, the discussions of complaints against the activities of the Police and the assessments in this regard, etc.

 

The Council of Europe Secretary General highly valued the activities of the Human Rights Defender during that period and noted that it had played an essential role aimed at guaranteeing the rights of citizens in terms of human rights.   

         

In his turn, Arman Tatoyan expressed his thankfulness to Thorbjørn Jagland for appreciating the activities of the Human Rights Defender and noted that during those days the standpoints of the Council of Europe Secretary General with regard to insuring human rights and the rule of law in the country were extremely important.

 

During the meeting, the participation of the Human Rights Defender in the projects implemented by the Council of Europe was discussed and highlighted.

 

The parties discussed the priorities in the field of human right protection and underlined the importance of deepening further cooperation with the Council of Europe’s bodies and projects.
